Training and delegating to support workers

The part that decides whether a complex arrangement holds together. A registered nurse assesses what’s needed, writes the plan, trains the support workers who deliver it, and reviews their competency against that person’s plan — the nurse stays accountable for the clinical decision, the workers deliver it daily with clear escalation points. Without it, an instruction sits in a file and the 7am worker improvises. With it, the instruction reaches the person delivering the support. Nursing inside SIL and short stays

In a Complete Choice SIL home, nursing oversight is part of how the house runs — the nurse who wrote the plan trains the team who work there. The same during a Short Term Accommodation stay, which is often what makes respite possible for someone with complex health needs.

What the NDIS funds, and what it doesn’t

The NDIS funds nursing where the need relates to your disability. Acute illness, hospital care and general health needs stay with the health system and your GP. The line isn’t always obvious — if you’re not sure, ask. We’d rather tell you it’s a GP matter than take a referral we can’t fund.
