Community participation is National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) funding for taking part in life outside your home — a class, a club, a gym, a volunteering role, a regular coffee with people you like. Complete Choice provides it across Adelaide, within 100km of the CBD.
The support is one-to-one and built around what you actually want to do.
What does community participation look like in Adelaide?
It looks like ordinary life in your part of Adelaide, with a worker beside you where you need one. That might be a class at your local library, a swim at the council pool, a walking group, a men’s shed, a TAFE SA short course, volunteering, or the footy. You choose; we help you get there and take part.

What if you don’t know what you want to do?
Then we start by trying things. A worker goes with you, you see how it feels, and you’re committed to nothing. Some things won’t suit; that’s information, not failure. Over time something sticks, and then it’s a routine rather than an outing. Not knowing yet is a normal place to start.
There’s no minimum. Turning up once a fortnight to something you enjoy is a real outcome.
How do you get there?
Transport is a separate support from community participation, and many people hold both — often with the same worker doing both. The NDIS can fund transport if you can’t travel or use public transport on your own because of your disability. If you’re working towards travelling alone, travel training can be part of it. What don’t we run?
We don’t run a day centre or group programs. Our support is one-to-one, out in the community, and Complete Choice isn’t registered for group or centre-based activities. If a group program is what you’re after, we’ll tell you and help you find one. A worker can still come with you to a group another organisation runs.
What changed on 1 October 2026?
From 1 October 2026, budgets for social, economic and community participation supports are reduced by 50%. The change is applied when your plan is created or reassessed, or renewed from 1 February 2027, and it can’t be reviewed. Some supports in this category aren’t affected, including high intensity supports and supports in employment.
You can keep using your current plan until then, and the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) will tell you before your plan is reassessed or renewed. It starts with a phone call to our office. You tell us what you need, or what you're not sure about. Then we look at your plan and funding, meet you, and agree in writing what your support looks like. Support begins after that, with review dates built in so it keeps fitting your life.

Questions people ask
What is community participation funding?
It's NDIS funding for support to take part in community, social, cultural and civic activities outside your home. A support worker helps you join in, whether that's a class, a club, sport, volunteering or catching up with friends. It's usually funded from Assistance with social and community participation, in Core Supports. Complete Choice provides it one-to-one across Adelaide, within 100km of the CBD.
Which NDIS budget pays for community participation?
Usually Core Supports, under the category Assistance with social and community participation. That funding pays support workers to help you take part in your community and personal interests, and Core funding is flexible across its categories. Separately, the Capacity Building category Increased social and community participation pays for building social skills and connections. Your plan shows which you have.
What activities can I do?
Whatever you want to do. Your support is built around your interests, not a fixed program. It could be a class at your local library, swimming at a council pool, a walking group, a men's shed, art or music, a TAFE SA short course, volunteering, or the footy. If you're not sure yet, we try things with you until something fits.
What if I don't know what I want?
That's a normal starting point. We try things with you: a worker goes along, you see how it feels, and you're committed to nothing. Some things won't suit, and that's useful information, not failure. What is increased social and community participation?
Increased social and community participation is a Capacity Building support category in your NDIS plan. It pays for supports that help you find and join activities that interest you and connect with people in your area, such as training to build social skills, making friends and building your social network. The funding is stated, so it can only be spent on supports in that category.
