SIL provider registration in 2026: what it means for you

Since 1 July 2026, registration with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Quality and Safeguards Commission is mandatory for Supported Independent Living (SIL) providers. Providers that applied by 1 October 2026 can keep delivering SIL while they're assessed. Your plan and funding don't change. You can check your provider on the Commission's public register.

What changed

From 1 July 2026, providers delivering Supported Independent Living (SIL) must be registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. Before then, some SIL was delivered by providers who weren’t registered.

Registered SIL providers now have to meet a set of NDIS Practice Standards written specifically for SIL, and they’re audited against them. The Commission has added a new registration group to their registration for it: 0138 — Assistance with supported independent living.

Providers who applied for registration by 1 October 2026 can keep delivering SIL while their application is assessed.

What didn’t change

Your plan and funding. The NDIS says these don’t change. If your provider doesn’t register, the NDIS will help you understand your options.
Self-managed support. If you organise or employ your own support workers, the NDIS says you don’t need to make any changes.

Is what I get actually SIL?

Under the NDIS Commission’s definition, it’s SIL when you need support at all or most times of the day and the provider manages and delivers that package of support in your home. It is not SIL if you only get a few hours of support a day or week, or you choose and manage your own workers, including rostering.

How to check a provider

It takes a couple of minutes.

Go to the NDIS Commission’s provider register and search for the provider by name.
Check the registration status says Approved, and when it’s in force until.
Look at the approved registration groups. A registered SIL provider shows Supported Independent Living among them.
Read any conditions on the registration. They’re public, and a good provider will explain them to you.

If the name on the register doesn’t match the name on your paperwork, ask the provider why before you go any further.

Questions people ask

Do SIL providers have to be registered now?

Yes. Registration with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission became mandatory for Supported Independent Living (SIL) providers on 1 July 2026. The NDIS says SIL can only be delivered by providers that are registered, or that applied to register before 1 October 2026 and are still being assessed. You can check any provider on the Commission's public register.

Will SIL provider registration change my NDIS plan or funding?

No. The NDIS says mandatory registration for Supported Independent Living (SIL) providers doesn't change your plan or funding. If your provider doesn't register, the NDIS will help you understand your options. This is separate from the budget changes of 1 October 2026, which reduce two support categories when a plan is created, reassessed or renewed.

Does SIL provider registration affect me if I employ my own support workers?

No. The NDIS says you don't need to make any changes if you organise or employ your own support workers. Under the NDIS Commission's definition, it isn't Supported Independent Living (SIL) when you choose and manage your own workers, including rostering them. If you're unsure which applies to you, ask your Support Coordinator.
